I did two similarly role-defining years at secretarial college (also mid-80s) and remain a touch typist to this day (although my shorthand is so rusty, it's practically nonexistent now). It's so interesting that you were tested on the keyboard layout. My hands know precisely where each letter lies, but I could not draw a plan of a keyboard to save my life — it's entirely muscle memory.
